This series follows the journey of a prodigious man who can seamlessly adopt any profession or persona he chooses. Having been raised in isolation within a mysterious think tank known as "The Centre," located in the fictional town of Blue Cove, Delaware, he escapes as an adult and uses his unique abilities to help people in need. Each week, he assumes a new identity—a doctor, a lawyer, a pilot, or any other profession—to right wrongs and uncover the truth, all while evading capture by the very organization that honed his skills.
The show's connection to geography extends beyond its fictional setting. While the story is primarily set in the United States, with the main character traversing the country, the production itself had a geographical shift. The pilot episode was filmed on location in and around Toronto, Ontario, Canada, giving the series its initial visual landscape. Following the pilot, production moved to Los Angeles, California, where the remainder of the series was filmed. This change in filming location influenced the look and feel of the show throughout its four-season run.
Inspired by the real-life story of serial impostor Ferdinand (Review) Waldo Demara, the series captivated audiences from 1996 to 2000. The protagonist's constant movement from one place to another, adopting new lives and careers, made the entire country his geographical playground. His quest for his own identity and the secrets of his past were interwoven with the diverse locations he inhabited, making the setting an integral part of his ongoing story. After the series concluded, two television movies continued the narrative, further expanding the geographical scope of his journey.
