In January 2026, a remarkable artifact was unearthed in Tønsberg, Norway's oldest town, during excavations by the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU). This discovery, a pristine medieval gold ring, quickly captured attention due to its exquisite craftsmanship and rarity. The ring features an oval, deep-blue "stone" that is likely colored glass, framed by intricate filigree work of thin, twisted gold wires and tiny granulated beads. This level of detail and the use of gold suggest it belonged to a person of high status in medieval society, possibly a woman, given its relatively small size.
Archaeologist Linda Åsheim made the find, describing it as an "out-of-body experience" as she uncovered it just seven centimeters below the surface in a cultivation layer. While the layer itself hasn't been directly dated, a spruce twig found above it was carbon-dated to between AD 1167 and 1269, firmly placing the ring in the Middle (Review) Ages. The spiral motifs on the ring show stylistic resemblances to designs from the 9th to 11th centuries seen in Norway, England, and Denmark, while the filigree and granulation techniques reflect influences from the Byzantine and Carolingian worlds.
This discovery is particularly significant because medieval gold rings are exceptionally rare in Norway. Only 220 gold rings are registered in Norway's national artifact database, Unimus, with just 63 of them dating to the medieval period. The last comparable gold ring in Tønsberg was found 15 years ago, making this find a truly special addition to the archaeological record. Beyond its material value, the ring offers valuable insights into the beliefs and craftsmanship of its time; blue stones, whether real or imitation, were believed to possess symbolic powers, such as preserving chastity and offering divine protection.
