history

While the vast Inca Empire thrived along the Andes Mountains of South America, the other two major civilizations occupied Mesoamerica. The Mayans, known for their advanced writing systems and monumental pyramids, were centered in the tropical lowlands of the Yucatรกn Peninsula and what is now southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize. This places them squarely in a southern and eastern position relative to their regional rivals.

It was the Aztec Empire that established its domain furthest to the north. Their heartland was the high-altitude Valley of Mexico, with their magnificent capital, Tenochtitlan, located on the site of modern-day Mexico City. From this central hub, the Aztec Triple Alliance expanded its influence across central Mexico, stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. This territory was geographically north of the Mayan city-states and thousands of miles north of the Inca capital of Cusco in Peru, which lies entirely in the Southern Hemisphere.
