He was initially interred in a mausoleum in Memphis's Forest Hill Cemetery, but less than a month after his funeral, three men were arrested in a bizarre plot to steal his body and hold it for a multi-million dollar ransom. The security breach made it clear that a public cemetery was not a safe or private final resting place for one of the most famous people in the world.

To prevent any future attempts and to provide a more secure site for him and his mother, Gladys, his estate received special permission to move their remains to his home, Graceland.
