The Hawaiian Islands were once an independent kingdom, and its final sovereign was Liliuokalani. Ascending to the throne in 1891, she was a gifted composer, author, and stateswoman, deeply dedicated to her people and their sovereignty. Her brief reign marked a pivotal and tragic era in the islands' history, as external pressures mounted against the native government.

Upon her ascension, Liliuokalani quickly moved to address the erosion of native Hawaiian power, which had been significantly curtailed by the Bayonet Constitution of 1887. She sought to promulgate a new constitution that would restore voting rights to many disenfranchised Hawaiians and strengthen the monarchy's authority. This attempt, however, met fierce opposition from American and European businessmen and sugar planters who had vested interests in maintaining their political and economic dominance.

These powerful foreign interests, with the support of the United States minister to Hawaii, staged a coup in January 1893. Despite her efforts to avoid bloodshed, Liliuokalani was overthrown and eventually forced to abdicate her throne. Her removal ended over a century of Hawaiian monarchy, making her the final ruler of the independent nation before its annexation by the United States five years later. Her legacy remains a powerful symbol of Hawaiian resistance and cultural pride.
