Lake Tahoe has only one outlet. Into which body of water does Lake Tahoe flow?

Despite its immense size, all the water that leaves Lake Tahoe does so from a single point. The lake's sole natural drain is located at a dam in Tahoe City, California, which regulates the outflow. From this point, the water begins its journey as the Truckee River. This powerful river is the only channel that carries water out of the vast alpine lake, making it a critical component of the entire regional watershed.

Interestingly, the water from Lake Tahoe never reaches the ocean. Instead of flowing west toward the Pacific, the Truckee River travels about 121 miles northeast, winding through the Sierra Nevada mountains and flowing directly through downtown Reno, Nevada. Its journey ends when it empties into Pyramid Lake, a large saline lake in the Nevada desert. This entire system is part of the Great (Review) Basin, a massive endorheic basin where water collects in lakes or evaporates rather than flowing to the sea.
