The shocking incident occurred in April 1993, when Monica Seles was the undisputed number one player in women's tennis. During a changeover at a tournament in Hamburg, Germany, a man ran from the stands and stabbed her between the shoulder blades with a nine-inch knife. The attacker was an obsessed fan of her primary rival, Steffi Graf, and stated he committed the act to help Graf reclaim the top ranking. The attack is considered one of the darkest moments in sports history.
While the physical wound healed in a matter of weeks, the psychological trauma was profound and haunting. Seles retreated from the sport for over two years, battling depression and an eating disorder as a result of the attack. Her eventual return to the court in August 1995 was a major sports story. In a testament to her incredible will, she won her very first tournament back and reached the final of the U.S. Open just weeks later. She would go on to win the 1996 Australian Open, completing one of the most remarkable and courageous comebacks the sport has ever seen.
