The animated film that explores the origin story of Mike Wazowski and James P. 'Sulley' Sullivan's friendship is "Monsters University." Released in 2013, this Pixar prequel delves into their college years, showcasing how the iconic duo initially met as rivals before ultimately becoming the best of friends (Review) and scare partners.

Set at the prestigious Monsters University, the film introduces a young, studious Mike Wazowski, whose lifelong dream is to become a top-tier scarer, and a naturally talented, but somewhat arrogant, Sulley, who relies on his family name and inherent scaring abilities. Their contrasting personalities and competitive spirits lead to an initial rivalry, particularly within the university's elite Scare Program. However, after a series of mishaps that lead to them being kicked out of the program, they are forced to join a fraternity of misfit monsters, Oozma Kappa, to compete in the campus-wide "Scare Games" in order to get back into the program.

This journey through the Scare Games challenges their individual strengths and weaknesses, compelling them to learn the value of teamwork and mutual respect. "Monsters University" not only provides an engaging backstory to their enduring bond but also highlights themes of perseverance, self-discovery, and the idea that true talent can come in many forms. It stands as Pixar's only prequel to date, offering fans a deeper understanding of how two very different monsters came to form one of animation's most beloved friendships.
