While the original restaurant that inspired the fast-food giant was located in California, the modern McDonald's Corporation traces its official beginning to the Midwest. The story starts with the McDonald brothers, Dick and Mac, who ran a highly efficient and popular hamburger stand in San Bernardino. Their success caught the attention of Ray Kroc, a traveling salesman who sold milkshake mixers.

Kroc was so impressed by the brothers' "Speedee Service System" that he saw massive potential for national expansion. He struck a deal with the brothers to begin franchising their concept. On April 15, 1955, Kroc opened his first location, which he considered the true launch of the company that would become a global phenomenon.

This pivotal restaurant was established in the Chicago suburb of Des Plaines, Illinois. Its iconic design, featuring red and white tiles and two massive golden arches, became the blueprint for the brand's rapid growth. Although the original building is no longer there, a replica museum stands on the site, marking the official birthplace of the McDonald's Corporation.
