This London theatre is named in honor of the celebrated Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw. Originally opened in 1971 as the Library Theatre, it was renovated and renamed in 1998 to commemorate the influential writer who had lived in the nearby King's Cross area. The theatre, located in the London Borough of Camden, serves as a lasting tribute to Shaw's significant contributions to drama and his connection to the city. Outside the theatre, a sculpture titled "St Joan" by artist Keith Grant pays homage to Shaw's acclaimed play of the same name.
Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1856, George Bernard Shaw moved to London in 1876, where he would become one of the most important figures in modern British theatre. He was a prolific writer, penning more than sixty plays that often explored complex social and political themes with wit and satire. His works, including famous plays like "Pygmalion" and "Saint Joan," challenged the conventions of the Victorian stage and introduced a new sense of realism. In 1925, Shaw was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his work.
The Shaw Theatre has a rich history of its own, hosting a wide array of performances since its opening. Over the years, it has welcomed numerous notable actors, musicians, and productions, including performances by Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, and Elton John. Famously, the band Queen rehearsed their legendary Live Aid set at the theatre in 1985. Today, as part of the Pullman London St Pancras hotel, the Shaw Theatre continues to be a vibrant cultural venue, upholding the legacy of the iconic Irish playwright for whom it is named.
